So, I was looking at the NFL section of Sportsline this morning and I noticed this countdown clock for a game 3 weeks away. It is between the Chargers and the Patriots. Now I ask you, and solicit your response, why on earth is there a countdown clock for that game? It's a battle of a terrible defense versus a now meager offense. There are many better games out there than this one that come before this game. Granted if Merriman and Brady were in this game I could see the appeal. This is just CBS clinging to the AFC because that is the conference that the hold the TV rights to. Fox Sports is much better off this year because the best teams have emerged as NFC teams. Think about it. If you have to name the best teams for the season so far you will have more NFC than AFC in there. Giants, Cowboys, Eagles, Packers should probably be top 5 with the Denver Broncos rounding it out. But aside from the Broncos what other AFC team can you put in the top 5? Note: the Broncos barely make it into the top 5 because their defense isn't stopping anybody and bad call has them 3-0 instead of 2-1. The Steelers are good, but proved yesterday they weren't better than the NFC teams named here. Colts are not good. Patriots lost to the Dolphins yesterday...where was the defense and Randy Moss? Bills are 3-0 but they almost lost to the Raiders yesterday. Can the case be made for anybody else? I'd put the Titans at the number 6 slot because of what they have managed to accomplish so far, but the mental toughness of that team worries me. If they keep it together they will play the Broncos in the AFC championship game this year. The pendulum is coming back to the NFC after years of AFC dominance. It was bound to happen at some point, and it appears this is going to be the year it happens. So again, why is CBS highlighting the SD v. NE game if not for trying to hype up their own product?

I don't completely disagree with your picks there. I put the Eagles in ahead of them in large part because they barely lost to the Cowboys, and even though it was a tight game with Pittsburgh, they still dominated the game even without their top offensive weapon. I actually like the Titans as the number 3 with Eagles at 4 and Broncos at 5. Bills and Broncos are kind of iffy though. Bills barely beat Oakland at home, and the Broncos are a couple plays away from being 1-2 instead of 3-0. They need a defense if they are going to go deep in the playoffs.

Since: Aug 31, 2007	Posted on: September 23, 2008 12:50 pm Chargers Vs Patriots Countdown Clock While I do agree with you that the countdown clock for the NE vs SD game is laughable, I wanted to post something last week about it, but apparently I'm not qualified to create a thread here, and there is an AFC bias here just as there is a NFC bias with fox, but to rank the Giants, Cowboys, Eagles, and Packers as your top four, I do question. Giants, Cowboys ok, even though their D has some very serious ?'s but until they lose they get the top 2 spots. The Eagles and Pack are out by default with the Eagle losing to Dallas, then struggling to beat the Steelers. The Pack don't even get a mention after their embarassing home performance on Sunday Night. So after the 1st two slots your AFC teams are going to creep in, I personally think the Titans are the best team in the AFC, they have the championship ingridients, a nasty defense and a strong run game, and their only mentally week link is sitting on the bench, other than that the Titans are on e of the mentally toughest teams I have ever seen, at least on defense. I watched them them stop the Texans 8 consecutive plays inside their 15yd line on Sunday. Denver is another team that looks really good right now but how are they going to look in November and December on those cold games at mile high? So bottom line is that it's way to early to tell but at this point my top 5 would be: 1. Dallas 2. Giants 3. Titans 4. Broncos 5. Bills But I tend to not only look at wins and loses but how you win and lose, and these teams despite their faults have shown the ability to win by either dominating their opponents or having the mental fortitude to pull it out in the end.
